GEAR UP Teacher Leadership Conference 2003 - "Literacy
Across the Curriculum: Are We Reaching Each Student? How
do we know?
This conference will build upon last year's themes for
improving literacy skills. We will focus on assessment
and inclusion and the ways in which literacy skills
can be developed throughout the curriculum. Reading specialists
and content experts will be joined by GEAR UP teachers
who have developed curriculum and successfully implemented
new strategies in their classrooms.
The third annual Chicago GEAR UP Alliance Teacher Leadership
Conference was held January 31, 2003, from 8:00 am until
3:00 pm. at the McCormick Place Hyatt. The conference
was very well received. More than 350 teachers from
34 elementary and high schools attended. Teachers
went away with curricular materials, books and new ideas
ready to transfer to their classrooms. This year's conference
offered 5 CPDUs (Continuing Professional Development Units)
to participating teachers.
Our
theme this year, Literacy Across the Curriculum: Are
we reaching each student? How do we know? , placed a
special emphasis on assessment and differentiated
instruction. Workshops and presentations facilitated
by GEAR UP staff and teachers, and outside experts covered
topics including; supporting reading and writing in
math and science, effective strategies for meeting needs
of all learning styles, and arts and inquiry based instruction.
Once again, each workshop highlighted the Chicago Reading
Initiative.
The
conference highlighted the leadership teachers are taking
in their professional growth through presentations of
successful curriculum developed through the project.
It also introduced new ways of looking at classroom
practice and provides follow up opportunities within
each GEAR UP network of schools. This year we are excited
to have included sessions that highlighted the productive
parent/teacher collaborations developed through GEAR
UP.
