What is the Tutoring Program?

The GEAR UP Tutoring Program is assisting students through the use of tutors so that they may improve their GPA, be better prepared for college or a job upon graduation, and improve upon the students retention rate. Below is a broad list of criteria needed to become a tutor.

Who are the Tutors and what are we looking for?
  • Tutors from similar backgrounds as the students they tutor
  • Tutors who live in the same neighborhood
  • B Average
  • Ability to tutor in major subject areas (math, english, etc.)
  • Ability to relate well to inner city, high risk students.

What will they do?
  • See the duties by contacting your network Tutor Coordinator
  • Assist with homework, assignments, special collaborative projects, and specific subjects.
  • Assist with data/research gathering at Chicago Teachers' Center and/or school assigned.

When will they work?
  • During school in classrooms as teacher's aide
  • During school in pull out programs
  • After school with special projects
  • Before school with small groups or 1 on 1 with a student

Where will they work?
  • 1-3 Tutors per affiliated school

HOW will they be trained?
  • One day training
  • Initial training followed by monthly or bimonthly meetings.
    How many Students will be served?
  • Up to 12 students per tutor
  • Groups of 3-4
  • One on One

KEY Elements of the tutoring program?
  • Establish relationships of trust and open communication between tutor, teacher and students
  • Communicate with teachers in ways of improving students' work
  • Diagnosis of students' academic problems through tutor evaluation
  • Evaluation and Assessment
