GEAR UP Teacher Leadership Conference 2003
January 31, 2003

"Literacy Across the Curriculum: Are We Reaching Each Student? How do we know? "

The Chicago GEAR UP Alliance focuses on creating sustainable change in schools and communities while providing direct service to all students and their families. Sustainable change requires us all to reflect on our own practice and to gain new knowledge and skills.

Just as parents and students are taking new risks, teachers are challenging themselves to try new methods, develop innovative curriculum, take on leadership roles, and participate in new partnerships for student success.

Staff of individual schools and universities bring many years of expertise to the partnership in a wide range of areas. The Chicago GEAR UP Alliance has a number of ways for this expertise to be shared across schools and networks and for new ideas to be supported.

Seminars/Institutes ranging from middle school certification courses to "Zen and the Art of Test Taking" workshops and "Young Adult Literature" Conferences are being offered within specific networks and across the partnership.

Summer Institutes provide time for more intensive work on specific areas. Curricula developed through these seminars and institutes is often piloted in Summer Academies within networks allowing teachers the opportunity to experiment with the full support of GEAR UP staff.
Vertical Teams in each network focus on Language Arts/English, Advisory/Transition, and Math and are comprised of teachers across grade levels and schools. Participating teachers work with GEAR UP staff to provide leadership in curriculum development and articulation within individual networks.

Innovative programs of each university are reaching new audiences through the GEAR UP partnership . For example, Online Expeditions and Countdown each use technology-the web and cable access television respectively-to involve teachers, students and parents in challenging and engaging projects.
