Golden Apple Awards at GEAR UP High Schools |

May 2010- GEAR UP high schools have some of the most talented teachers in the state. This last week two of those teachers were honored by the Golden Apple Foundation for their excellence in teaching. Aaron Reedy from Kelly High School is a science teacher. Reedy, a former Peace Corps volunteer teaches science in a way that brings it to life for students. Besides teaching biology, he has introduced a zoology class at Kelly. He was quoted in Chicago Breaking News as saying, "As long as you can get out of the way and let the subject be as interesting as it is, they really have no trouble with it". His students seem to agree. |

Rosalind Kline-Thomas from Michele Clark High School is an Algebra teacher known for her dedication and positive attitude. She moved from the corporate sector to teach math at Clark. ABC News was on hand to cover the celebration. You can read the ABC News article and watch a video online. Besides the recognition, there are some rewards. Each winner will receive $3,000 and free tuition at Northwestern University for six months. The Golden Apple award has been bestowed upon a select group of teachers every year since 1986, when Martin Koldyde, founder, decided that excellent teachers deserved to be recognized for their contributions to education.
