June 2010- GEAR UP students are earning high school credit this summer while on campus at some of the best places in Chicago to learn, namely: Wright, Truman and Daley – all City Colleges of Chicago. Wednesday, June 30, 2010, Wright College. Professor Antonio Vasquez introduces students to concepts in economics that can help them better prepare for a productive college career, including some startling information: in 2009, there were 3 million jobs that employers in the United States could not fill, many because there weren’t enough skilled workers to hire. Maria Llopiz, Associate Dean of Student Services at Wright College, explains that presentations by professors are part of the summer curriculum. “We want them to know the benefits of attending a city college.” What she and Jenny Zuluaga, GEAR UP ccordinator, hope they will learn this summer is that City College is their resource for life. |

Ms. Borg from Clemente High School and Mr. Davis from Foreman are the teachersfor the GEAR UP Summer program at Wright. At Wright, students are learning about the sciences and arts. The curriculum is a combination of activities and presentations designed to help students gain a wider perspective of possible college and career paths. Students learn about recycling by making their own paper. They explore biomedical science and ethics by learning about Megan Crowley, who at 15 months was diagnosed with Pompe disease, a rare genetic disorder. Ms. Borg, their summer science teacher, who hails from Clemente, a GEAR UP high school, says the students will watch a movie, follow up with a written test and discussion of the issues raised in biomedical engineering. There are plenty more activities planned for the students who will earn a ½ high school credit for successfully completing the summer program. Will music lessons be one of them? Mr. Davis, their arts teacher, from Foreman, another GEAR UP high school, says, “It’s going to be a surprise.” The program runs through July 23, 2010.
