Isabel Castrejon says the internship program at Children’s Memorial opened both her eyes to the realities of nursing and doors for her career. John H. White~Sun-Times |
Student Discovers Health Care Career Through GEAR UP - Isabel Castrejon, a GEAR UP graduate, is fulfilling her dream of becoming a nurse, a career that she learned about in the Discovering Health Care Careers summer program offered at Children's Memorial Hospital through funding in part from The Chicago Teachers' Center and the GEAR UP grant.
Every summer since 2001, students have been able to explore the health care field, gaining hands-on experience and real world knowledge they simply could not get from a classroom setting or text book. Castrejon, who was interviewed for a Sun Times article said “My six weeks in Discovering Health Care Careers and the opportunity to observe what really happens in a hospital rather than relying on a textbook … was life-changing."

David Sperling, GEAR UP Staff member, presenting college readiness information at a GEAR UP workshop. |
We don't always find out what path our students have chosen once they graduate from high school and the GEAR UP program, says David Sperling, a GEAR UP staff member. We do know that our students often have very limited information from which to make a career decision. Providing students with opportunities to explore careers is an important aspect of the GEAR UP program. The grant has allowed the Chicago Teachers' Center to partner with Children's Memorial Hospital and Chicago Public Schools to offer the Discovering Health Care Careers summer program since 2001. |
