Summer Film Institute – Now in its second year, Chicago Teachers' Center Summer Film Institute is developing into a robust and rigorous program where students learn about careers in multimedia, while developing skills that will help them in any career. "They give you responsibilities and deadlines," says José, who participated in last year's program as well. That first year he notes he had never even picked up a camera before. This year he's feeling more assured. "With this confidence," he says, "I can go into new fields." Heriberto, another student in the program says that he's not used to working with a team; he usually works alone. "It was a nice experience," he says, "working with new people I really didn't know."
Working under the guidance of Chicago Teachers' Center multimedia team, 26 students are divided into groups to create 4 short films. They begin with a story board, film their project, edit it and then present their film at a final showing. During the course of the program, students are expected to reflect on what they are learning through written assignments and oral presentations.
