Original Workshop Description for YAL 2011
Dancing with the Devil and the Common Core: The Devil in the White City
Karen Boran and Sharon Hartrich, Presenters
Understanding the features of a text that make it complex for struggling readers helps teachers decide which strategies will best meet their students’ needs. In this highly participatory session, we will use The Devil in the White City and additional expository texts to explore and compare the lives of the Dr. H.H. Holmes, serial killer, with Daniel Burnham, dreamer and architect of Chicago’s 1893 Columbian Exposition. Teachers will learn interactive and kinesthetic strategies that develop critical literacy skills to ready 11th and 12th grade students for college and careers. Specifically, we’ll look at critical thinking, argumentation, and vocabulary through the lens of the Common Core Standards. Participants will receive unit materials. |
