Note: Although we wish to support teachers in this current economic climate, we've had to cancel Teachers as Writers summer workshop 2010, due to low enrollment.  We will offer Teachers as Writers again in the fall. Please check for further updates or feel free to contact us at teachersaswriters@neiu.edu for ways in which we might serve your school. Please check back for Fall 2010 workshops.

Teachers as Writers is a community of teachers who are passionate about their own creative writing and about sharing stories with supportive peers.

Led by published writers and professional development specialists at the Chicago Teachers’ Center at Northeastern Illinois University, using proven classroom approaches to writing and reading, writing sessions are presented as workshops that appeal to grown-up interests, intelligence, and considerations.

The core of every workshop is each teacher’s personal, transformative experience as a writer.  Teachers also brainstorm together, seeking classroom applications that are informed by their own challenges and successes on the page, their first-hand understanding of the unique needs of their student communities, and their expertise using state standards and academic mandates.

Teachers as Writers gathers on Saturdays several times during the school year and for a summer intensive at the Chicago Teachers’ Center, 770 N. Halsted in Chicago.  CPDUs are available.
