GEAR UP offers teachers several resources for developing their teaching skills. Most of these programs are offered free of charge to GEAR UP teachers. See the list below.
Literacy Across the Curriculum
For 10 years the Chicago Teachers’ Center’s Young Adult Literature Conference (YAL) has offered interactive workshops highlighting engaging books for adolescent readers and high quality literacy instruction. The 2010 conference was held in October at the Q Center in St. Charles. Visit the YAL web pages to find the latest YAL resources.
The Inquiry Institute is generally offered in the summer. Plan, design, and do inquiry-based learning within a caring classroom community. Students “doing” inquiry are challenged to ask real questions, find relevant resources, construct meaning and report new understandings. What we teach and how we teach matters so learn more about this energizing approach to learning. Check back for information about the 2011 summer program.
Teachers As Writers offers a unique approach to professional development, beginning with the belief that teachers who are aware of their own writing process are better able to help their students become confident writers. Guided by experienced educators who are also practicing writers, you will write and share your work in a supportive community of peers.
Here’s a great opportunity for you and your students! Attend a GEAR UP professional development event and write a unit plan for your students using what you learned. We’ll give you a class set of books so you can implement your completed unit in your classroom. Contact us for more information and assistance.
Math Resources
Thinking creatively and finding new approaches to teaching, learning, and communicating math! That’s what we hope to foster during our math conferences. Participants will be immersed in rich, hands-on, thought-provoking activities that integrate the best of what we know about instructional strategies. Our purpose is to work with teachers to prepare our students for success in this global environment. So let your imagination fly, rekindle that sense of wonder- we promise, it will be fun! CPDUs offered. View the iMATHination 2012 flyer. The next iMATHination Confernce is January 20 - 21, 2012. Check back for registration information.
